What to do in Palma de Mallorca

We live and work in the middle of Palma's old town, so people ask us this every single day. Here's the honest local answer — sun, rain or heatwave.

1 · Start with the old town (it's free and it's stunning)

Palma's historic center is one of the best-preserved old towns in the Mediterranean. Start at La Seu Cathedral — the sandstone giant by the sea — then lose yourself in the shaded lanes behind it: patios, tiny plazas, and shops that have been there for generations. Coffee on Passeig del Born, a pastry stop for an ensaïmada, and you've already had a perfect morning. Best in the morning before cruise crowds, or in the evening golden hour.

2 · Pick your beach

You're on an island — use it. Playa de Palma is the long, easy, family-friendly stretch with every service imaginable. Cala Mayor is closer to town and a little more sheltered. Both are 15–20 minutes from the center by bus. Go early or late in July and August; the midday sun is no joke.

3 · The midday problem (and how locals solve it)

Here's what every guidebook skips: between about 13:00 and 17:00 in summer, Palma is hot. And in shoulder season, when it rains, it really rains. Every family in town ends up asking the same question: where do we go for the next hour?

Our honest answer (yes, it's ours — but 551 Google reviewers back us up): Fantasy Museum, right on Plaza Mayor. 9 immersive rooms — a 20,000-ball pit, infinity mirrors, a star room with 2.5 million lights, sand art with real Mallorca sand — all indoors, all air-conditioned, all photo-friendly. It's about 45–60 minutes of pure fun, which is exactly the size of the gap between lunch and the beach cooling down. Kids from €9.99, two minutes from the cathedral walk.

4 · Castell de Bellver — the view over everything

A circular 14th-century castle on a hill of pine trees, with the best panorama of the bay. Go for the view even if castles aren't your thing. Combine with a taxi up and a walk down through the woods.

5 · Palma Aquarium — the big half-day option

Near Playa de Palma, with one of the deepest shark tanks in Europe. It's a solid half-day with kids — bigger and slower-paced than the city-center attractions, so save it for a day when you want one main plan rather than a stroll.

6 · Eat like you mean it

Mercat de l'Olivar for fresh everything and tapas counters. The old town for long dinners. And the cafés around Plaza Mayor for people-watching with coffee and cake — perfectly placed before or after a museum visit.

A one-day Palma plan that actually works

  • 09:30 — Cathedral + old town wander while it's cool
  • 11:30 — Coffee & ensaïmada on Passeig del Born
  • 13:00 — Lunch in the old town
  • 14:30Fantasy Museum — the air-conditioned fun break while the sun peaks
  • 16:30 — Bus to Playa de Palma for the soft-light beach hours
  • 20:30 — Dinner back in the center. Sleep like a champion.

Rainy day in Palma? Your shortlist

1. Fantasy Museum (Plaza Mayor — indoor, warm, an hour of joy) · 2. La Seu Cathedral interior · 3. Es Baluard modern art museum · 4. Mercat de l'Olivar grazing lunch · 5. Palma Aquarium if you have a car. In that order, you've beaten any storm.
